How Barometric Pressure Affects Fishing

Before fishing, you may monitor factors such as weather conditions, water temperature, and currents that affect your fishing in advance. But most people ignore barometric pressure. Barometric pressure may also affect your fishing trip.

1.What is Barometric Pressure

Barometric pressure, also known as atmospheric pressure, is a force created by the weight of the air within the Earth's atmosphere. It changes over time depending on the density of the air, temperature, and altitude.

2.Barometric Pressure Range

Normal barometric pressure moves between 29.80 and 30.20 inHg. Barometric pressure readings above 30.20 inHg are generally considered high pressure, which is associated with clear skies and calm weather. Barometric pressure readings below 29.80 inHg are generally considered low pressure, which is associated with warm air and rainstorms.

3.The effect of barometric pressure on fish

Most bony fish have an organ called the swim bladder, which acts as an internal regulator. Adjusting the contraction and expansion of the swim bladder through the swim bladder muscle allows the fish to adjust the density of the body, rising or sinking in the water. The fish experience discomfort when their swim bladders respond to changes in stress. When the barometric pressure drops, the swim bladder expands uncomfortably inside the body. To relieve this discomfort, fish will try to move through the water and travel to deeper waters or absorb extra gas into their bladders. Changes in barometric pressure exert different forces on different fish, and the smaller the fish, the more pronounced the barometric pressure effect. When barometric pressure increases, the swim bladder contracts, and the fish may take 24 to 48 hours to return to normal behavior.

4.Which barometric pressure is more suitable for fishing

The vast majority came to the following conclusions when it comes to barometric pressure and fishing.

1) At high pressure and the sky is clear, the fish bite medium to slow. So fish slowly in deeper water or close to cover.

2) Normal fishing is possible when the pressure is moderate and the sky is clear. You can use different fishing lures for normal fishing to meet the needs of the fish.

3) During low pressure and cloudy or rainy days, fish activity decreases. So fish slowly in deeper water or close to cover.

4) When the pressure rises and the weather improves, the fish are slightly more active. So attack them slowly in deeper water or near cover.

5) When the pressure drops and the weather worsens, the fish will be very active and they will most likely accept whatever food you offer them.

5.How to measure barometric pressure

The easiest way is to check the weather forecast on the weather app. However, this method cannot obtain accurate barometric pressure readings. So, you can use a handheld barometer or weather meter.
