What Color Fishing Line Should you Use?

When shopping for fishing lines, you may come across several different choices of fishing lines. Fishing lines are mainly divided into three types: monofilament, braided, and fluorocarbon. You may be able to tell which type of fishing line is better for you, but you may be confused about choosing the color of the fishing line. Choosing the best fishing line color can be complicated, and it's important to understand that the best color depends on the species of fish and the environment you are fishing in.

1. Do fish see colors?

Fish can see color as discussed in the previous article 'Little Known Facts About Lure Colours - And Why They Matter'. The retina of fish contains rods and cones. Cones are the cells that distinguish colors. Some fish can see ultraviolet and some are sensitive to polarised light. And fish have an excellent contrast-detection ability.

2. The color of the fishing line

Fishing line comes in a variety of colors. The best fishing lines for Human visibility are yellow, green, or orange because darker colors receive more light and produce sharper silhouettes and stronger contrasts.

Fluorocarbon, especially in clear water, is almost invisible. It has light reflection properties very similar to water light reflection properties. This type is excellent for fish that are easily scared and suspicious. Pink fluorocarbons are also very common. The pink color loses its color at different depths, it blends with the water and becomes clear to the fish.

Monofilament is the most popular line choice on the market and it comes in several different color options. You will usually see them in yellow, red, blue, or green color, or even a transparent option. The high-vis yellow color is great for anglers who watch their line to detect bites. Red lines are also said to become invisible underwater. The blue line is relatively clear underwater, but the blue tint makes it easier to see above water. Green is a good color for blending into the water and blending in with its surroundings. Green may be more noticeable than clear in very clear water though. Clear monofilament works well in all situations.

Braided lines have some excellent properties, but being invisible is not one of them. If fishing with braided lines, you will have to pay attention to the color and choose a suitable one for a given situation.

3. What color fishing line is best?

This can depend on what fish you are targeting or what fishing environment you are fishing in.
