Are You Choosing The Right Fishing Spoon?A Really Short Guide

Fishing spoons are one of the most common lures in fishing but are often overlooked by anglers. The true potential of fishing spoons is worth exploring for anglers, with their wiggling, vibrating motion in the water and the flash of light reflected from metal surfaces. Fishing spoons are generally made of metal and have an oblong shape with one side recessed into the water. When the fishing spoon is retrieved through the light-reflecting water, it catches the water, creating a sloshing and light-reflecting flash, which mimics a fleeing or injured baitfish.

The Type of Fishing Spoon

There are many types of fishing spoons, with different shapes and thicknesses. Such as casting spoons, jigging spoons, trolling spoons, and weedless spoons.

1)Casting Spoons

A casting spoon is the most basic type of fishing spoon. It typically weighs two ounces and has a thicker body with a treble hook on one end. The basic technique for spoon fishing is to cast it out and reel it back.

2)Jigging Spoons

Jigging spoons are often considered deep-water decoys, ideal for predators typically found on deep structures. It weighs anywhere from 1/2 to 2 1/2 ounces. But before using the jigging spoon you have to find the bass and drop the fishing spoon straight down.

3)Trolling Spoons

Regular trolling spoons have an elongated profile and are thinner and lighter relative to other fishing spoons. When slowly towed during surface action, the trolling spoon swings through the water, vibrating and shimmering in the light like a wounded baitfish.

4)Weedless Spoons

Also known as a Slop spoon, a weedless spoon has a curved convex bottom belly that allows it to slide over or through shallow water grass, weeds, or other forms of shallow cover. Most weedless spoons are equipped with wire or bristle weed guards to prevent snags.

Choosing the Right Fishing Spoon

Fishing spoons come in all shapes, sizes, weights, and colors.

In general, use a fishing spoon about 3 to 6 inches long. Large fishing spoons are suitable for most saltwater species, but smaller fishing spoons are more effective against less aggressive fish.

The weight of the fishing spoon determines how deep it runs. Lighter spoons are great for fishing in shallower waters, while heavier, thicker spoons sink faster, cast farther, and fish deeper.

The color selection of the fishing spoon is determined by the light intensity and watercolor. Gold and silver are the main colors of the fishing spoon. In well-lit conditions and clear or lightly polluted waters, yellow and red fishing spoons can be used. In low-light situations and stained or darker water, a darker-colored fishing spoon is the best choice. Silver and white are neutral colors that work in bright, low light, clear, and dirty water conditions.
