A Really Short Guide: The Important Parts of a Fishing Rod

When you know your fishing rod like the back of your hand, you can use it to its full potential. A fishing rod is made up of many parts. The sections are roughly divided into top and bottom. The top includes the tip-top, the tip, the guides or eyes, the windings, the ferrules, the blank, and the hook-keeper. The bottom includes the butt, the butt-cap, the reel seat, and the handle.

1)Tip top

The tip top refers to the metal guide at the very tip of the rod. It is the guide at the very tip of your fishing rod, the smallest and probably the most important guide. It's very fragile and one of the parts most likely to break off.

2)Tip

The tip is the uppermost part of the fishing rod, and below the tip, the thinnest and most flexible. It is usually used to measure the rod, by comparing it to its opposite end. Tips are typically divided into 2 variations: soft and hard.

3)Guides or eyes

Fishing rods have small rings that run along the body of the fishing rod, these rings are called guides or eyes. These guides keep the fishing line in close contact with your rod. A fishing rod usually has two to four guides, and this number can be decreased or increased, depending on the length of the rod.

4)Windings

Windings are one kind of string that attach the guides to the body of the fishing rod. They prevent the guides from being ripped off the rod and help reduce the friction of the line moving off and on the reel.

5)Ferrules

A fishing rod can be made up of multiple sections that are connected by plastic or metal joints called ferrules. They need to be strong so the rod won't fall apart.

6)Blank

The blank is the main body of your fishing rod, which connects to all the other parts of the fishing rod. The blanks can be made from many different materials, with the most common being fiberglass and graphite.

7)Hook-keeper

A hook-keeper is a metal ring that is attached to the main body of the fishing rod, and the angler can hang the fishing line on the metal ring when he is not fishing. The hook-keeper facilitates the task of transportation.

BOTTOM

1)Butt

The butt is the thickest part of your rod below the handle. Many butts have additional metal components that enable them to be twinned with rod holders.

2)Butt-cap

The butt cap is at the bottom of the handle and is made of rubber, plastic, wood, or cork. Its main function is to protect the rod blank and handle.

3)Reel seat

The reel seat is where you attach the reel to the rod and is the main part responsible for casting and reeling the line. Its material and size depend mainly on the type of reel and the type of rod that you will use.

4)Handle

The handle is the part located below the reel seat where you hold the rod with your hand and can be made of rubber, foam, cork, or a similar material.
