3 Spinnerbait Tweaks To Wake Up Winter Bass

Generally, the colder the weather, the harder it is to fish. In winter, fish can be lethargic and not interested in most fishing lures. But not all fishing lures won't work, and that's when you can choose those that have more appeal to the mood of wintertime fish and oftentimes fish them differently, such as a spinnerbait. A spinnerbait can be used year-round, although the vast majority of fish caught with spinnerbaits are caught in the fall and spring. But if you can adjust the spinnerbait properly, maybe you will get a windfall.

1.Slow down

In winter, fish activity slows down. Stumps, logs, and brush piles offer great refuge for a lethargic wintertime bass. Spinnerbaits designed for slow rolling is generally larger in all dimensions, with oversized blades, frames, heads, and hooks. So, you can roll the spinnerbait slowly around docks, rocks, vegetation, or shallow cover, slowing your retrieve down to stay in the same strike zone. Slowing the spinnerbait down to a crawl will result in more bites.

2.Change the blades

The types of blades often used by spinnerbaits are double willow, willow/Colorado, and single Colorado blades. The larger blade, the more resistance it will create. The resistance of the big blades not only helps the fish locate them but also helps slow the way you fish them down. Therefore, in winter you will need to change the front blade to a slightly larger Colorado, Indiana, or No. 7 Willow blade. Not only does this help the bass feel the vibration better, keeping the bait off the bottom and the strike zone, but it also keeps the spinnerbait away from the bottom and strike zone and slows it down.

3.Add a trailer

Using a trailer on a spinnerbait not only adds bulk to the hook but also increases the buoyancy of the spinnerbait, making it easier to wake up the lure without having to reel at a high speed. When fish strike, they suck water in to help inhale prey into their mouths. By having more bulk on the hook you increase the suction towards the hook. This increases the chances of hooking the fish instead of them missing the hook and striking the blades.
