Squid is a very delicious food on the table and is very popular among anglers. Squid fishing is great fun and even young children can enjoy it. Anglers often use squid jigs to catch squid. Choosing an effective squid jig from the plethora of squid jigs out there can be a bit of a challenge. Therefore, I hope that through this article, through the discussion of squid jigs, you can confidently choose the squid jigs that suit you.

1. What is a Squid Jig

Squid Jig originated in Japan, fishing squid is called eging, so squid jig is also called egi jig. Most squid jigs consist of a hard body representing a shrimp or baitfish, which is a hollow plastic body. The end consists of a circular array of barbless spines pointing toward the front of the jig. The squid jig is usually covered with a cloth so that the squid sucker doesn't get a good grip on it and then slides down to the barbs to be caught.

2. How the Squid Jig works

When squid attacks the squid jig their tentacles become entangled in the spines. As long as one maintains a steady tension on the line, the squid will remain hooked until drawn from the water. After landing, all one has to do is grab the jig, turn it upside down, and the squid will fall off. Squid jigging most often takes place at night, using lights to attract the squid.

3. Operation method of squid jig

Jigging is a common fishing technique designed to attract and catch squid. Vertical jigging is a productive method for catching squid. Squid Jig should be cast out and allowed ample time to sink to the bottom, then snap the rod up sharply two to five times to about the 2 o’clock position in rapid succession. And the snap-jigging motion lifts the jig off the bottom and causes it to dart erratically from side to side, catching the squid’s attention from a distance. Squid will then quickly approach the bait to within striking range and stalk it as it sinks.

From the shore, the most common method is to suspend a squid jig under a float, cast it out, and wait for the float to be pulled under the surface or for the rod to bend. The squid is then wound in with steady pressure.

The most common method for catching squid from a boat is to find a likely-looking seagrass bed and drift across it with a couple of squid jigs trailing out the back of the boat. When a squid grabs a hold of the jig the rod bends over or the handline starts spinning and bouncing on the deck, the squid is then brought to the boat with a very steady retrieve so as to not break off the tentacles.

4. Selection of squid jigs

Squid jigs come in a myriad of different sizes, styles, and colors.

Generally, squid jigs starting from 2.5 to 4.0 sizes are best and should get you a fair amount of squid. These numbers reflect length, not weight. When squid is small or is quite timid, a smaller squid jig in the 2.0 to 2.5 size range is recommended. If the average size of the squid is big then put on the biggest jig you have and you will generally only catch bigger squid.

Squids have amazing eyesight and are quite intelligent, and they love to attack pretty, shiny jigs. If you look closely at a squid jig you will notice that, while it has a particular color or pattern on the cloth coating, you will see that under the cloth covering there is another color shining through. These under colors or foil coatings are usually metallic in appearance and vary between a few core colors.

When choosing colors the general rule of thumb is that the lighter the conditions and the clearer the water, the more natural the colors. For dirty water, brighter colors will work best. Brighter colors like pink and orange work well during the day, while darker colors like red and purple work well at night.
