Should You Choose Hard Lures or Soft Lures? Read And Find Out (1)

Advantages and disadvantages of hard lure

Should I use soft lures or hard lures? This question is something we often have to consider in an unfamiliar environment. It is also a difficult choice for most beginners. Beginners are not so familiar with every type of lure and are not confident enough to use any type of lure. Even seasoned anglers are constantly thinking about this question, as they seek to maximize their hit rate, not just a few lures that are known to work well. By discussing the advantages and disadvantages of hard lures, it is helpful to choose hard lures and soft lures.

Advantage of hard lure

1)Casting distance

Casting distance is a clear advantage of hard lures over soft lures. The rigid construction of the hard lure is more aerodynamic and does not deform when cast hard. Many hard lures are designed with a special long-range casting system. When the lure is cast, the counterweight can be transferred to the tail end of the lure. This changes the center of gravity of the lure when casting and increases the flight distance of the lure.

There are also some metal hard lures, such as spinners, metal jigs, etc. They can be cast farther due to the increased density and low drag. Metal hard lures are often the preferred lure for many anglers just by their excellent long-range performance.

2)Durability

Another advantage of hard lures is their durability. Hard lures can withstand attack from target fish and general wear and tear. If used properly, hard lures will last longer than soft lures. Using a hard lure may be a wise choice in certain situations, such as when the target fish has sharp teeth.

3)Larger vibrations

Some hard lures can vibrate violently underwater, triggering an attack response in some fish. Hard lures like metal VIB can clearly feel the strong vibration of the metal VIB in the water from the fishing rod. Some soft lures also have high-frequency vibrations, such as T-tail soft lures or soft VIBs, but their vibrations are much more subtle than hard lures.

4)Unique swing swimming style

For example, hard lures such as sinking pencils and minnows are designed with a unique underwater swinging action to imitate an injured baitfish. It is very difficult for soft lures to have such an overall swinging swimming style.

5)Unique pumping motions

Floating or suspending jerkbaits dive to a preset depth with a unique motion when you draw the rod, then slowly surface or suspended in a layer of water. There is currently no soft lure that can mimic this action. These movements also mimic a dying or injured baitfish.

6)Actions like the Surface Popper

Popper should be regarded as one of the most distinctive lures. The shape and structure of the front part of the Popper can form a large air bubble underwater and a large water splash on the water surface. This louder sound, along with the vibrations of the water, can attract target fish over a longer range.

7)Sound

These hard lures have steel balls inside to attract fish with sound. While some soft lures can be inserted into small accessories with snap beads, the sound of the bead inside the soft lure is not as loud as the sound from the hard lure.

Disadvantages of hard lure

1)High price

The price of a hard lure is generally 10 to 100 times that of a soft lure. The materials and processes required to make a hard lure are much more than that of a soft lure.

2)Fishing hook types are limited

Hard lures require specific types of hooks, usually triple hooks in many cases, Jig hooks, and single hooks. One of the biggest problems with triple hooks should be that it is troublesome to remove the hooks, and there is a certain risk that it is easy to get into the hands. The price of Jig hooks is relatively high, and there are relatively few types of options for single hooks.

3)Can't keep the fish mouth

This means that after the target fish bites the hard lure, it will immediately realize that this is not the prey it is looking for, and will soon spit the hard lure out of its mouth. This causes you to miss out on many opportunities to catch fish.

4)Easy to run fish

Hard lures are more likely to be unhooked by the target fish's jumping, gill washing, etc. If you use the jig hook on the hard lure, the probability of this unhooking will be lower.

5)Can't hide the fishing hook tip

One of the great things about a soft lure is that it hides the tip of the fishing hook inside the lure and still hooks the mouth of the target fish when it bites or swallows the soft lure. This can effectively reduce the chance of the lure hanging on the grass, and it is relatively less likely to hang on the bottom of the structure area. Hard lures can’t do this, so they’re easier to hang on sundries and bottom than a soft lure with a hidden hook.

6)Not resistant to impact

If a hard lure hits a hard object such as rock, cement, or metal when casting, it will easily cause the lure to crack and damage and make it impossible to continue to use it.

7)The fishing hook is easy to hang on the fishing line

When using a triple hook, there is a possibility that the leader line may become entangled on the hook. At this time, replacing the triple hook with a single hook can significantly reduce the probability of thread entanglement.
